Dr. Lal Ekanayake

Director General

Dr. Lal Ekanayake, a distinguished sports and exercise physician, serves as the Director General of Sports Medicine. With 45 years in sports and 25 years in sports medicine, he has been instrumental in advancing athlete care and sports science. Holding esteemed qualifications from Ruhuna University, the University of Colombo, and the IOC, he plays a pivotal role in international sports governance as the Medical Committee Chairman of the Central Asian Volleyball Federation and a Medical Committee Member of the Asian Aquatic Federation. His expertise and leadership continue to shape the future of sports medicine and athlete performance

Dr. Dhammika Senanayake

Team Physician

Dr. Dhammika Senanayake has been working in the field of sports medicine for over two decades. He is currently the Team physician for the Sri Lanka National athletics team. He is qualified in Sports Medicine and Sports Nutrition.


Dr. K.A.P. Kiriella

Sports Medicine Physician

Dr. K.A.P. Kiriella is a seasoned Sports Medicine Physician with over 15 years of national and international experience. He holds an MBBS and a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Medicine, and is a certified World Rugby Educator, ICIR Level 2 qualified, and an AIBA-certified ringside doctor. In 2016, he was honored with the Presidential Award for the Most Outstanding Sports Physician in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Kiriella currently serves as the team physician for Sri Lanka’s national cricket, rugby, and several combat sports teams. 
He is deeply committed to athlete care, injury prevention, trauma management, and clean sports advocacy. A passionate educator, he also plays an active role in the development and promotion of sports medicine in Sri Lanka and beyond.

Dr. Chathura Akalanka Edirisinghe

Sports Medicine Physician

Dr. Chathura Akalanka Edirisinghe is a dedicated Sports Medicine Physician with over five years of national and international experience. Holding an MBBS along with advanced diplomas in Sports Medicine (IOC), Musculoskeletal Medicine (UK), and Football Medicine (FIFA), he excels in the diagnosis and management of sports-related injuries. Dr. Edirisinghe is passionate about athlete care and education, regularly contributing as a visiting lecturer and serving as a key team member in various sports and medical organizations. His work spans injury prevention, acute trauma management, and clean sports advocacy, ensuring athletes receive the highest standard of care both on and off the field.


Ms. K.A. Awarjana De Silva

Physiotherapist

With over three years of dedicated experience in Sri Lanka’s sports medicine sector, a highly motivated and proficient Physiotherapist holding a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University brings valuable expertise to the field. Currently practicing at the esteemed National Institute of Sports and Exercise Medicine, she specializes in the diagnosis, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement of elite athletes across diverse sporting disciplines. Recognized for the ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams, the expertise extends to on-field physiotherapy at major national and international sporting events, demonstrating practical skills in high-pressure environments. Actively contributing to the academic development of future professionals as a lecturer at the National Institute of Sports Science and the University of Kelaniya further highlights a commitment to the profession and continuous growth. Driven by evidence-based practice, a valuable asset in optimizing athletic potential and fostering a culture of excellence.


Ms.Imalsha Udayanjalee

Sports Physiotherapist

Ms.Imalsha Udayanjalee, a passionate and highly skilled Sports Physiotherapist from the National Institute of Sports Medicine – Sri Lanka, with over three years of hands-on experience in both on-field and clinical settings. Currently serving as the official physiotherapist for the Sri Lanka Women’s National Football Team, with a proven track record in injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement. Holds a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science from the University of Peradeniya. Experienced in working with elite athletes across various sports disciplines in Sri Lanka, delivering athlete-centered care tailored to high-performance environments. Known for collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams and consistently supporting athletes in reaching peak performance.
